Manufactured in late 1972 as a U.S specification 2.7L carburettor three speed automatic and sold in the west coast of the U.S. Standard specifications included air conditioning, tinted glass, radio and leather interior. At some unknown time, it was fully converted to 5 speed manual with a new engine, by the leading west coast SM specialist. It was also painted in a non-standard white & cream two tone colour scheme. It then did a relatively small amount of driving before having a minor front end accident, being cheaply repaired and after wearing out the clutch put up for sale. It was sold with a starting problem and a failed hydraulic pump. It was bought off e-bay and taken to a N.Y. SM specialist who fitted a new clutch & did running repairs to make it drivable. It was then imported to the U.K. Driving the car on its arrival showed it to be in basically good condition, with a sound engine and a perfect gearbox. Detailed inspection showed no rusting. It was then decided to repair the car up to rally capable standards and enter it into a serious event. The interior seats were removed, and various other interior parts so as to lighten the car. The electric windows were stripped and refurbished, and the front & rear screens were removed and refitted as the bonding had failed. Generally a full tidy up of the body of the car was taken, repairing original parts and fitting them up correctly, with various missing parts added. The air-conditioning was already part removed so the condenser on front of the radiator was also removed. It is simple to refit the air-conditioning. A rear beam for full harness seat belts was made up and fitted to the C pillar factory mounts. A speedometer was fitted in place of the glove-box so as to be better accessible to the navigator, and the original was blanked off. Fabric covered front seats were fitted to provide better support, and full harness eat belts were fitted. The paintwork was touched up and T cut with significant improvement. The under-bonnet area of the car was made bare completely, and an inspection of the front subframe mountings found the expected weld cracking. This was all re-welded, including additional welds to the later production standard. The gearbox was inspected, found to be first class, and the half axles were removed and the bearings check tightened. New seals were fitted to the front brake callipers. The engine was stripped as it was out of the car and needed to have solid exhaust valves fitted. Inspection showed it to be in very good basic order. The pistons rings & liners were as new, but there was minor wear in the bearings due to extended cranking (from the starting problem). These were replaced, the engine was re-built with a new rear timing chain, the modified rear timing chain curved fixed limiter and all other possible production line modifications as well as the exotic metal solid exhaust valves. A modified water-pump turbine with a ceramic seal face was also fitted. The transmission was reassembled and refitted to the car with careful inspection of all parts and replacement of any suspect items. The driveshafts were stripped & cleaned. The car was then extensively test driven to everyones satisfaction. A roll limiter was fitted to the front suspension in addition to the roll bar and the suspension spheres at the front were replaced with ones with stiffer damping. The car was then entered into the rally, and driven to the start. The car completed in a fault free manner apart from one driveshaft which was replaced on day one as a precaution, and it remains in a ready to go condition, having completed about 3000 miles after the above work. The driver in the Tour Auto, Bob Linwood was very complementary about the performance provided by the engine and the roadability of the car, for instance taking 30 seconds off a well driven Ferrari on a 4Km special stage! You have heard of car granny stories well here is a daughter story that
documentation seems to confirm. This 1972 Citroen SM left hand drive
built for US market, was purchased by a Detroit automotive executive
and car collector for his daughter Paula Giorgio on her eighteenth
birthday. It was garaged in the familys multiple car garage with
other collector classics of her fathers choice.
Paula may not have been a classic car buff or may have wanted a
different colour for the car was apparently not worked hard or re-
registered after 1989, indicated by the Michigan number plate that
came with it. We assume it was advertised for sale after Paulas
fathers death or when she moved address (see identification sticker of 98).

Sydney SM enthusiast and salesman Peter McCleod collected a
number of cars from the USA in the late 1990s. When he purchased this
one for export it had done only 46,000 miles in about 27 years. He
said it was the best he had seen and an independent Citroen expert was
also impressed on inspection. Peters engineers restored the vehicle,
re-assembled and renovated the engine and sold it to expatriate
photographer Sean McMenomy, on holiday in Sydney in early 2000. While
it was transferred through Peters and Seans fathers name in
transit it has essentially had only two owners in 38 years.

Sean intended to use the car when home on holiday from London but in
ten years has been only able to get away from business twice. His
father has stabled the vehicle in a moisture-proof brick garage under
cloth cover and given it short runs bi-monthly while looking after
servicing. This was initially handled by McCleods workshop at
Unenderra and later by local Citroen expert John Vanerchop at Mittagong.
The car was exhibited at the combined French Car rally in Sydney 2001,
winning best SM of the day against five others, and runner up for best
car of the day overall. In 2002 it came runner up for best SM of the
day. It has not been exhibited since parents and caretakers settled on
a farm between Bowral and Goulburn in the Southern Highlands of NSW.
In ten years it has only had routine servicing to hydraulic spheres
and a new, more efficient air-conditioning unit has been installed.
Between 2000 and April 2010 its mileage has averaged 1,100 per anum to
its present 58,000 miles.

The front-wheel drive holds the road magnificently and I have found no
trouble driving from the left position on curb edge of lane rather
than centre of road. The 2670cc V6 Maserati, with triple dual-throat
Weber carburettors give extra power and acceleration for time of
manufacture. Nor is it particularly thirsty at 2.6 litres. The dual
exhaust gives the machine a beautiful but not over-loud, throaty note.
Over ten years it has given pleasure and reliability on routine
highland exercise runs of 130-150 kms or on more rare occasions 300
kms to and from Sydney. The superb and quite unique styling plus above
features keeps heads turning in its path.

It has been pampered appropriately since restoration and purchase,
rarely driven in the rain although it could possibly swim, treated as
it deserves, and the condition of mechanics, hydraulics, electrics,
leather interior, paint and bodywork is A1, some of this clearly
visible in the images.

with original Beige interior and it also being a 2.4 litre engined model,
which was built in 1970 and is chassis number 1194 – there were 179 built that year out of a total production run between 1969 to 1973 of only 424.

It was first registered in March 1970 in the Treviso area in Italy.

The first owner was Prince Egon Sebastian von Furstenberg, who was a very famous fashion stylist of the era. He was the son of Ira Furstenberg, renowned Italian actress, and was a nephew of Mr Gianni Agnelli, chairman of Fiat Auto. This vehicle was believed to be his first car. Egon died in May, 2005.
The second owner Carlo, was a well-known surgeon, born in 1915, again in the Treviso area of Italy. He bought the car in 1971 and sold it latter that year to Claudio Rosimetti, a personal friend of Gianni Agnelli (they were at the same school).
In 1993, Claudio sold the car to Mr Alexandre Alexandre,
the Fiat/Alfa/Lancia agent for Treviso, to put into his personal
Ferrari & Fiat collection ( picture taken in collection ).
It remained there till 2005 when we personally viewed the car in the collection, prior to arranging the purchase on behalf of its current owner -
a New Zealand collector in 2005. and then it was then exported to New Zealand. Where it has been maintained regardless of expense with a fully rebuilt engine in 2010, new clutch, brakes, tyres etc.
The car comes with numerous receipts including the original Italian registration papers, showing the full ownership history and also with a extremely rare & valuable Factory supplied hard top.
We have a very detailed photographic file and also the car has been
the subject of an editorial in Classic Car in New Zealand.
